Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (flor de jamaica)
  • 8 cups water
  • 12 cinnamon sticks (optional)
  • 23 slices fresh lemon (optional, for serving)
  • Ice cubes (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Boil the water
    Add the 8 cups of water to a large pot and bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the hibiscus (and cinnamon, if using)
    Stir in the dried hibiscus flowers and the cinnamon sticks. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 5–7 minutes.
  3. Steep off the heat
    Turn off the heat, cover the pot, and let the mixture steep for about 10 minutes so the color and flavor get nice and strong.
  4. Strain the liquid
    Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large pitcher and carefully strain out the hibiscus and cinnamon. Discard the solids.
  5. Chill the agua de jamaica
    Let the liquid cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold, at least 1–2 hours.
  6. Serve and enjoy
    Pour into glasses over ice. Add a lemon slice if you like, and enjoy your agua de jamaica para adelgazar unsweetened for the lowest calories.

Notes

For a milder flavor, use ½ cup hibiscus instead of 1 cup.
For a stronger concentrate, simmer up to 10 minutes and steep a bit longer, then dilute with cold water to taste.
Keep it unsweetened if your goal is weight loss; if you need a little sweetness, try a small amount of stevia or monk fruit.
The agua de jamaica will keep in the fridge for about 3–4 days in a sealed pitcher.
